Storage decrease

I'm having a bit of trouble with the fluctuations with the amount of free space on my OS. I already had a live agent and a level 2 technician look at the issue yesterday but the issue still persists. Ever since, I updated Windows on Friday, the amount of free space on my OS went up from 106-109 GB to 137-143 GB. At least, immediately after start up. However, after some time of activating my computer, the GB of free space would gradually start to decrease. It decreased slowly before but now it seems to be decreasing faster as it is already at 139 GB about 10 minutes after start up now. I am aware that the free GB would fluctuate but I noticed it would only be by about 1-2 GB and would go back to the full amount from time to time. Some of the issues that may have been causing it, as explained by the live agent and level 2 technician, may have been due to the OneDrive syncing being unknowingly activated or having the "Hibernate" option activated under the power options. Those have been deactivated but the problem persists.

    Hi WilliamMabanta

Greetings! I am Vijay, an Independent Advisor. I am here to work with you on this problem.

You can execute following to gain space on your computer

    1. Use Storage Sense to delete unnecessary files

Type Storage in Cortana Search Box > Click Storage > Click Change how we free up space > Down below there is button Clean now under Free up space now which you should press

    1. Use Disk Cleanup

Type Disk Cleanup in Cortana Search box > Click Disk Cleanup > Check relevant options (you can also clean system files)

    1. Analyze disk space

You should analyze your existing space with help of third party softwares and remove un-necessary files. TreeSize is most popular one and is a Microsoft Store app.

    1. Check for log files in CBS directory

Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Check the size of CBS.Log and if size is huge >

Type services in Windows Start Search box > Click Services > Scroll down to find the Windows Modules Installer service and double-click on it > Set its startup type to Manual > Reboot your computer

Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Delete all of the files in the CBS folder (or rename and move to a backup drive) > Reboot your computer > Then go back into the Services App and set Windows Modules Installer Service back to Automatic Startup (Note CBS log files contain information about windows update.

    1. Microsoft has also some suggestions to improve disk space.

    Hi William,

To find the underlying issue, you need to monitor the folder sizes on your PC, once we can work out what folder is changing size ,then we can work out what process is causing this ...

Windows Explorer is useless when it comes to working out where your hard drive space is being used . . .

Click the link below to download a small free utility called Treesize. Using that tool, you will instantly see where this space is being used

    https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

Run TreeSize on your C drive, every hour for a few hours, each time, take a screenshot of the TreeSize Window

Then by comparing the screenshots you will be able to narrow this size fluctuation to a specific folder

When you have done that, please post those screenshots and I will then be able to find what process is causing this for you
