This article documents the ADMX policy settings available to IT administrators for managing Surface diagnostic data collection. These policies control what diagnostic information Surface devices send to Microsoft and whether end users can override those settings.
Surface diagnostic data is separate from Windows diagnostic data. These policies apply only to telemetry collected by Surface-specific components and don't affect data collected by Windows or third-party applications.
Tip
For more information about what Surface diagnostic data includes, see Diagnostic data for Surface products - Microsoft Support.
Surface Diagnostic Data Setting
By configuring this policy setting, you can choose what diagnostic data is collected from Surface products. This policy setting applies only to Surface diagnostic data and doesn't affect data collected by Windows or third-party applications.
As part of using Surface products, sending required diagnostic data to Microsoft helps keep Surface products secure, up to date, and working as expected. Surface products remain secure and operate normally no matter which option you choose.
Diagnostic data prerequisites
- Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) or Windows 11
- Surface Integration Service (SIS) version 6.215.30 or higher
Diagnostic data policy settings
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Not Configured / Disabled (initial value) | The diagnostic data setting isn't enforced by policy. It's managed locally through the Surface app. Required diagnostic data is sent after user notification, and users can choose whether to send optional diagnostic data. |
| Enabled – Send Required Surface Diagnostic Data | Required Surface diagnostic data is sent to Microsoft. This is the recommended configuration. |
| Enabled – Surface Diagnostic Data Disabled | Blocks Surface diagnostic data transmission. Not recommended. The policy must be enabled and this option explicitly selected to apply. |
Diagnostic data behavior
- When Enabled (either of 2 settings above): The diagnostic data setting is enforced by policy and overrides user configuration in the Surface app. To allow users to modify this setting, configure the End User Surface Diagnostic Data Setting Management policy.
- When Disabled or Not Configured: The diagnostic data setting isn't enforced and is managed locally through the Surface app. Required diagnostic data is sent after the user is notified through an app notification, and users can choose whether to send optional diagnostic data through the Surface app.
Note
This policy may not fully apply until after a device restart.
Diagnostic data registry details
The following registry values are written when this policy is applied:
Registry path: HKLM\Software\Policies\Surface
| Value name | Type | Data | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
SurfaceDiagnosticDataSetting |
REG_DWORD | 1 |
Send required Surface diagnostic data (recommended) |
SurfaceDiagnosticDataSetting |
REG_DWORD | 0 |
Surface diagnostic data disabled (not recommended) |
When the policy is set to Not Configured or Disabled, the registry value isn't present or is removed.
Diagnostic data OMA-URI
./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/Surface~Policy~SurfaceCategory~Surface_DiagnosticData/SurfaceDiagnosticDataSetting
End User Surface Diagnostic Data Setting Management
By configuring this policy, you determine whether users can override the diagnostic data setting enforced by the Surface Diagnostic Data Setting policy. When Surface Diagnostic Data Setting is configured, it overrides the user's selection in the Surface app unless user override is allowed. This policy applies only to Surface diagnostic data.
End user override prerequisites
- Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) or Windows 11
- Surface Integration Service (SIS) version 6.215.67 or higher
End user override policy settings
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Enabled | Users can override the Surface Diagnostic Data Setting policy in the Surface app. |
| Disabled or Not Configured | Diagnostic data collection is managed by the Surface Diagnostic Data Setting policy. User-configured settings in the Surface app are overridden. |
End user override behavior
- When Enabled: Users can override the Surface Diagnostic Data Setting policy in the Surface app.
- When Disabled or Not Configured: Diagnostic data is managed by the Surface Diagnostic Data Setting policy, which overrides any user-configured settings in the Surface app.
- When Surface Diagnostic Data Setting is also Disabled or Not Configured: The diagnostic data setting isn't enforced by policy and is managed locally through the Surface app. The Surface product sends required diagnostic data after user notification through the Surface app, and users can choose whether to send optional diagnostic data.
Note
This policy may not fully apply until after a device restart.
End user override registry details
The following registry values are written when this policy is applied:
Registry path: HKLM\Software\Policies\Surface
| Value name | Type | Data | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
EndUserSurfaceDiagnosticDataSettingManagement |
REG_DWORD | 1 |
End users can override the diagnostic data policy in the Surface app |
EndUserSurfaceDiagnosticDataSettingManagement |
REG_DWORD | 0 |
End users can't override the diagnostic data policy (default) |
When the policy is set to Not Configured, the registry value isn't present or is removed.
End user override OMA-URI
./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/Surface~Policy~SurfaceCategory~Surface_DiagnosticData/EndUserSurfaceDiagnosticDataSettingManagement
