Bluetooth mouse doesn't auto connect when the PC wakes up

I have Windows 11 24H2 and have 3 bluetooth mice from different brands and models and they all worked perfectly for years. 3 months ago I moved to a location with a metered internet connection so I disabled windows updates until I returned home.

Once I had a stable connection, Windows installed all the latest updates, however now any bluetooth mouse I connect to my computer loses it's connection after the computer has restarted or woken up from sleep, and the mouse is still there in the paired devices list but when I click on it it fails to connect without any error message, and I have to forget the device and pair again for it to work.

I tried this with the 3 mice that used to work before the updates, I thought about rolling back the updates but I made the mistake of clearing the backup with disk cleaner since I was about to run out of storage on my system partition.

I also tried uninstalling the drivers for the mice, the bluetooth controller and any related drivers from device manager even the hidden ones, and I ran the device troubleshooter.

I also noticed the error message below in the events page in device manager that might lead to the root cause of the issue and it appears on all bluetooth related devices and all USB related devices as well even after re-pairing them and reinstalling their drivers (screenshot attached)

Hi Adham Magdy,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum and sharing the details of your experience. I understand how frustrating it must be to have your Bluetooth mouse stop working reliably, especially after years of smooth performance. I truly appreciate the time and effort you've already invested in troubleshooting this issue.

Based on your description and the error message you found, it appears the recent Windows 11 24H2 update may have disrupted how Bluetooth devices reconnect after sleep or restart.

Below are several steps that have helped other users resolve similar issues:

Step 1: Disable Power Management for Bluetooth Devices

Sometimes Windows turns off Bluetooth devices to save power, which can prevent automatic reconnection.

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Bluetooth and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Right-click each device > Properties > Power Management tab.
  • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
  • Repeat for all Bluetooth-related entries.

Step 2: Allow Mouse to Wake the Computer

This ensures the mouse can reinitialize the connection when the PC wakes up.

  • In Device Manager, expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Right-click your mouse > Properties > Power Management.
  • Check “Allow this device to wake the computer”.

Step 3: Disable USB Selective Suspend

This prevents Windows from suspending USB ports that may affect Bluetooth dongles.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings.
  • Click Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
  • Set it to Disabled.

Step 4: Check Whether Bluetooth Services Are Running

Certain services need to be running in the background for Bluetooth to function properly.

  • Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and click OK.
  • In the Services window, locate Bluetooth Support Service (press B to jump quickly).
  • Ensure its status is Running. If not, right-click and select Start.
  • Repeat this process for:
    • Bluetooth Audio Gateway Service
    • Bluetooth User Support Service

Step 5: Reinstall Bluetooth Drivers

Reinstalling drivers from the manufacturer can resolve migration issues.

  • In Device Manager, uninstall all Bluetooth-related devices.
  • Restart your PC.
  • Visit your PC or Bluetooth adapter manufacturer’s website and download the latest drivers manually.

To help you identify the correct driver version for your Bluetooth adapter, please let me know the manufacturer and model of your device (e.g., Dell XPS 13, HP Spectre x360, Lenovo ThinkPad T14, etc.).

Once I have that information, I can guide you to the most compatible and stable Bluetooth driver version for your system.

Please keep me posted on how it goes, and feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance. I'm here to help.
