Problems activating Microsoft 365 apps on new 24" iMac – they were activated, but now it's asking me to activate again but won't do it when I try

Hi. I have a new 24" iMac, and I use Microsoft 365 for Mac. I had already activated Outlook and Word, but today it asked me to activate them again, and when I tried to log in to Microsoft, it said 'An unknown error has occurred 0x0". I could not log on. I could not open Word or Outlook. I tried using the tool that's meant to remove the licensing, in case that was the issue, downloaded it but then it didn't run, and I couldn't find it on the system. I need both Word and Outlook to do my job.

    Hi,

Sincere apologies for the trouble you are having. I am seeing a lot of similar issues today, so something is at the backend causing this.

I'm going to run through a few steps with you. Some of these are diagnostic — they help me narrow down what's wrong, not fix it outright. So if nothing changes after a step, that's normal and expected, not a dead end. I'll keep going until we've got this resolved.

    1. May I know the Mac version you are running? Is it fully updated?
    2. Is it a Microsoft 365 subscription or an Office standalone?

Microsoft made some changes as discussed at https://yourwindowsguide.com/2026/07/microsoft-365-for-mac-not-working.html but it should not affect any new machine.

I look forward to hearing from you to get the results of the troubleshooting.

I fixed this one myself. I saw somewhere in the online help that you needed to reinstall the Microsoft 365 apps. I had already removed all old Office stuff from my iMac. I went to my Microsoft account, to the Subscriptions page, to Install, and reinstalled Microsoft 365. It's working for now! That is, I can get into and send and receive emails in Outlook. I can create and save and modify Word files. Fingers crossed it stays fixed!

Thanks for your help, Sumit. Even though the things you'd suggested so far hadn't worked, it meant a lot to actually have a human being on the end of the line trying to help me.

    No problem.

On Mac, remove the Microsoft Office licensing files using these steps:

    Quit all Microsoft Office applications.

Open Finder > Go > Go to Folder... and navigate to:

    /Library

    Open the Group Containers folder.

Delete the following folders if they exist:

    UBF8T346G9.Office
    UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost

Go back to Go to Folder... and open:

    /Library/Preferences

    Delete:

    com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.plist

    (If present.)

    Empty the Trash.

    Restart the Mac.

Open an Office app and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your license to reactivate Office.

Thanks, Tricia. I can understand it is an issue from the backend since @frankie collard is also having the issue.

Can you remove the license files and try to activate again, in a hope it works?
